Draco Malfoy - The Misunderstood

I know all that most people can think of when Draco Malfoy is mentioned is an evil blonde who was a pain in the ass to Harry. But are people ever what they seem like? We all talk about how one shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. How we shouldn’t judge a person when we haven’t lived their life. So what do you imagine Draco Malfoy’s life was like?

He is a complex character that hasn't been explained in depth in the books. Of course, the books had plenty to do. They were Harry Potter's stories. Wonderful Potter with his scar and his broomstick... Poor Draco didn't have enough time to be explained or understood by most readers who thought him to be a spoiled brat and nothing more. I don't deny that he was a spoilt brat but I can't help but believe he was more than that.

What do you imagine Draco Malfoy’s life was like? I believe he had a much closer bond with Narcissa than Lucius. I can’t help but also imagine that Lucius treated him as nothing more than a trophy heir, someone of importance only because he had to carry forward the precious family name. With what he was taught to believe, did he really have a choice between good and bad? We see Ron struggling with his beliefs about Parseltongues, werewolves and house elves and all the things that the normal wizarding world was prejudiced about and he only starts questioning them when he is made to question them by people who gave him a different perception, people he loved - Harry and Hermione. But who did Draco have? Was he ever given a chance to think independently? Even if he ever did, would he have ever been forgiven, just for bearing the last name, Malfoy, by the rest of the world?

What do you imagine Draco Malfoy’s life was like? Do you wonder if he was abused by Lucius for losing Quidditch matches to Harry Potter? I do. Do you think he was insulted for scoring lesser than the over smart mudblood, Granger, in all the exams? And then when Lucius lost his standing amongst death eaters, what do you think Draco was treated like? When Bellatrix broke out of prison and lived with the Malfoys, don't you think she must've been bored? She definitely must've had no inclination to talk to Lucius who couldn't process the fact that he could no longer be the proud man he once was nor that he was effectively the man of the house. He had actually given up everything to his Dark Lord. Nor could Bellatrix have been inclined to talk to her own sister, Narcissa, who got too acclimated to the domestic environment of the Malfoy Manor. Can you imagine Bellatrix wanting to toy with his nephew a little just because she was out of victims and being caged inside the manor was boring? I can...

What do you imagine Draco Malfoy’s life was like? Imagine the pressure that Draco was under to take up the family name - not to make his old man was proud of him but to make sure he was alive; to see to it that his mother was not tortured for his father's mistakes. It must've occurred to him only then what it actually meant to be a Death Eater. I wonder if he lost his sleep trying to get himself ready to go through with it or trying to think up a way to get out of it. Defecting wouldn't have been easy. He probably just knew he didn't want to be on the bad side. But was there a good side? I wonder if he thought about that. What I definitely know his head must've been filled with would be the images of his parents tortured to death if he ever defected. His father was beyond help. But his mother, his sweet mother, who was the least feisty of her siblings, deserved a chance. She couldn't be doomed just for the fact that she did not stand up against the horrors that his father inflicted upon the world. She did all she could, he would’ve thought. She protected her own world as much as she could – her only child.

What do you imagine Draco Malfoy’s life was like? What do you think happened when he failed at his mission to kill Dumbledore? He hesitated, remember! And he must’ve never been anything more than a boy who was too scared to finish his job to the Dark Lord. He must’ve looked like a complete wimp to his hardcore aunt, Bellatrix and the rest of the Death Eaters. Do you wonder what had happened to Draco for not identifying Harry at the Malfoy Manor once they all escaped and while we were mourning the death of poor Dobby? I shudder to think of how Draco would’ve been punished by a man who massacred a herd of goblins at Gringotts. He was probably left alive by the Dark Lord for sake of not spilling the precious pureblood they were all so obsessed about. But he could be hurt, right - without spilling a drop of his blood? The punishment for being insolent, for being more humane than pureblood, must’ve been brutal.

What do you imagine Draco Malfoy’s life was like? I imagine his path was one of the hardest to walk. And I believe that anybody who doesn’t have the imagination to think about that shouldn’t probably judge him. He lived a hard life, bore his scars proudly, never bent his head to anybody – maybe just to Harry, a nod to acknowledge his presence in a room. And that I think is beautiful, not perfect but beautiful all the same.

A person who loves to not just read books, but bring forth the characters to life inside her head; then she loves them, hates them, studies them like specimens, and analyses their redeeming qualities and flaws, all the while wishing she were a part of the story and its universe.
PS: she also loves long sentences.
